OpenAI, which developed the ChatGPT chat system, is defending itself against a lawsuit by Elon Musk accusing the billionaire of abandoning its original mission. The company claims he wanted to take control of it and was seeking a directorship. The start-up’s co-founders, led by CEO Sam Altman, wrote on their blog on Tuesday. They said Musk also campaigned in 2018 to merge OpenAI with electric carmaker Tesla, which he runs; emails from that time are supposed to prove it.

Lawsuit

Musk sued OpenAI last week. He said the company, which he co-founded in 2015, deviated from its agreed path, which was to develop artificial intelligence (AI) for the benefit of humanity, not for profit. Now the changes are primarily benefiting the main investor Microsoft, which Musk said is a gross violation of the original founders’ agreement.

The other founders of OpenAI have announced that they are seeking to have Musk’s lawsuit dismissed in court. They wrote that it is sad that someone they deeply admire has now gone to court after they have made significant progress without his help. When Musk left OpenAI, they said, he gave the company zero chance of success. He himself had intended to develop artificial intelligence under the banner of his company Tesla.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT has become the fastest growing software app in the world in the six months since its launch in November 2022. It has also spurred the launch of rival chatbots by Microsoft, Alphabet and a number of start-ups that have leveraged interest in AI to raise billions from investors. ChatGPT is able to understand text to some extent and generate appropriate outputs based on the inputs provided. It is used for a variety of purposes, including answering questions, providing information, generating text, creating content, and other applications. ChatGPT has already been adopted by many companies because of its ability to perform a wide range of tasks, from summarizing documents to writing computer code.
