US technology company Google, part of the Alphabet group, is investing $15 billion (CZK 315 billion) in the construction of a data center for artificial intelligence (AI) in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It will be the company’s largest data center outside the United States, Google said, according to Reuters.

The one-gigawatt complex will be built in the port city of Visakhapatnam, the largest in this southern Indian state. “This is the largest AI center we will invest in anywhere in the world outside the US,” said Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian.

“At a time when data is the new oil, such initiatives will serve as a strategic advantage,” said Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokes.

Artificial intelligence requires enormous computing power, which increases the demand for specialized data centers. Microsoft and Amazon have already invested billions of dollars in building data centers in India. The Asian country is a key market for global technology giants, with nearly a billion users having access to the internet, Reuters noted.

Alphabet technology conglomerate

Google, part of the Alphabet technology conglomerate, operates the world’s most widely used internet search engine. It is also behind the Android operating system, which is used by almost all smartphone manufacturers.

Alphabet’s market value exceeded $3 trillion (approximately CZK 63 trillion) for the first time in September. It thus became the fourth company to break this barrier. The others are the American companies Nvidia, Apple, and Microsoft. Alphabet’s current market capitalization is $2.96 trillion. Market capitalization expresses the financial value of a company based on the total value of all shares in circulation.
