Billions of Dollars in Trade Remain at Stake
Trump signed the order imposing the 50% tariffs last month, arguing that Canada had treated U.S. alcoholic beverages, automobiles, and dairy products unfairly. If implemented, the measures would affect approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports annually.
Canadian negotiators have already spent a week in Washington, and according to local media, Ottawa has offered several concessions. These include putting pressure on Canadian provinces to restore U.S. alcohol and wine to their shelves. The outcome of further negotiations will determine whether the planned tariffs are withdrawn permanently or take effect once the three-day suspension ends.
