The movie Spider-Man: Brand New Day broke the North American opening weekend box office record, earning $360 million (nearly 7.6 billion CZK) in ticket sales. Sony announced this today, according to the AP news agency. Previously, Avengers: Endgame held the record for the highest opening weekend gross in the United States and Canada, set in 2019. With $357 million in revenue, it was the first film to cross the $300 million mark.

Bigger Than Expected
Today’s figures surpass Sony’s estimate released on Sunday, which put revenues at $355 million. The fourth film in the Spider-Man series was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, with Tom Holland starring in the lead role. According to available data, the film’s production cost $225 million, excluding marketing expenses, AP writes. However, there were concerns that the film would not generate the same level of broad audience enthusiasm as its predecessors.
“Records are meant to be broken, but we’ll be very proud of this one for as long as we hold it,” AP quoted Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group.

A $4 Billion Summer
According to exit polls conducted by PostTrak, ticket buyers were mostly male (approximately 61 percent), with a significant portion of the audience skewing younger. EntTelligence, a box office analytics firm, estimated that approximately 24.1 million moviegoers watched the film over the weekend.
According to Paul Dergarabedian, head of market trend analysis at Rentrak, the Spider-Man effect could help the summer movie season surpass the $4 billion mark in total box office revenue. This would be the first time since the summer of 2023, which was dominated by the phenomenon known as Barbenheimer – a combination of the films Barbie and Oppenheimer.
