The British government plans to invest £14.2 billion (approximately CZK 416 billion) in the construction of a new nuclear power plant, Sizewell C. This was announced today by the British Ministry of Finance. According to the government, the construction of the power plant, which has been planned for several years, will directly employ 10,000 people and create thousands more jobs in supplier companies.
Energy needs
‘Today, we are once again investing in Britain’s renewal through the largest nuclear energy construction programme in a generation,’ said Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves. ‘We are creating thousands of jobs and kick-starting economic growth,’ she added.
According to the government, the new power plant will be able to meet the energy needs of six million households. Energy Minister Ed Miliband described the development of nuclear energy as a path to a ‘golden age of clean energy abundance.’ ‘It is the only way to protect family finances, regain control over energy and tackle the climate crisis,’ he added.
Investment in the project
According to Reuters, Britain is seeking new investors for the Sizewell C power plant project, but today’s government report does not mention the involvement of any other entities. The report also does not contain information on the total cost of the project or the expected completion date.
The Sizewell C power plant was originally a project of the French power company EDF. However, the British government currently has a majority stake in the project, while EDF is a minority shareholder, Reuters notes. The head of EDF’s British operations, Simone Rossi, welcomed the British government’s decision to invest over £14 billion in the project.
